    Hi guys

im new to this fourm as i am new owner to a bmw e46 318 coupe 6 cylinder,

    I have a few questions??

    1) I bought the car about a month ago and i have noticed their is quite alot of oil leeking out where the oil filler cap is, i was hopeing that it was the seal on the cap that had gone so i replaced the cap and it doesnt seem to have done anything maybe slowed it down a little, i was told it coule possibly be the rocker cover gasket? i have looked online at the part, the part doesnt seem to exspensive but the fitting looks really aquward with not much space to move about, any ideas on what it could be? and if so how do i go about fixing it?

    2) the car has a bit of a clunk when i put it in gear, the clunk come from the rear, im guessing its the diff? :S im hopeing not as i would of thought that would be an exspensive one, any ideas on what else it could be?

    3) my car is due for a service soon and when i do it i want to be abel to reset the computer how do i do this, my pal has all the diagnostics soft ware the runs on the OBD 2 set up! is this how you do it or not?

    4) last but not least, i think the clutch might be going, alought i might b wrong and it might just be that i am still getting used to it! i have to pretty much come off the clutch for it to engage like right up at the top?

as for any work that needs to be done im lucky that my best friend is a mechanic and runs his own small garage just up the road from me only problem is that he doest have ramps or a pit so im a little worried about the diff and clutch as thats gonna be a verry exspensive garage bill if it is!

    can any one help please

    thanks you!

    1. Your car is a 4 cylinder and not a 6

    2. The rocker cover gasket is a common place for a leak on this engine, you will need to remove the rocker cover to replace the gasket.

    3. You can reset your service interval indicator through the obd providing you have the right software

    4. The clunk is more than likely the rubber donut needs replacing where your props haft meets the diff

No an m43 engine that was 118bhp - 4 cylinder

Then the n42 that was143 iirc which is also a 4 cylinder

The n42 replaced the m43 engine and it was a 2.0 engine instead of a 1.9 but both engines are still 4 cylinder.

You can argue about it till your blue in the face but the car is still a 4 cylinder car

    What he said, 4 cylinder.

However, if oil is actually coming out of the oil cap hole then replacing a rocker cover gasket is not going to help that is it?

He said it was around that area, so it could be the rocker cover underneath

Ok okay im sorry after i looked into it i relised its a 4 my mistake but more to the point i broke down last night and any help would be great!

I pulled out of a junction was nearly home and i had complete loss of powe a red oil light came on the red battery light came on and if i remember correctly a yellow warning triangle, any way i had complet loss of power and loss of stearing, i put oil in it the other day, now i know it was leaking round the rocker cover so i jumped out and checked the oin it was just above the min mark, i swiched the engine back on and the lights wernt their apart from the yellow oil can for about 5s but that has always come up since i bought it! It revs fine but then cut out! I thought it could of maybe been the MAF sensor but then the red batter light (altenatir?) light wouldnt apper then i thought maybe the altenator had gone? I started it back up and tried to drive home only 3 mins round the corner, as i drove off the gear changes were far from smooth the car jerked like hell and it didn't feel right to drive! i got home and has a quick look online it was a diffrent car the thread was about but they were talking about some belt could of slipped off or snapped? Im wondering if the oil had leaked out of the rocker cover gasket and caused a belt to come off? I have had a look and everything looks to be okay, apart from all tge oil that has leaked out and onto the plugs at the front of the engine and onto the pullys, Does anyone have any ideas, please help as i need it for work!

    no problem
im no e46 expert but i remember reading that on these if the ecu gets a low oil pressure warning it will
cut the engine to prevent damage so get the oil leak fixed
also if the holes were the spark plugs are fills with oil it can cause problems with the coil packs and the car will run ruff
so for now clean all the oil up expeshialy where the plugs are top up the oil and see how it runs
