    Hello!

Just been browsing though the forum for a while, as I'm picking up a '97 E36 328i SE tomorrow evening.

I feel very reassured, as I'd been led to believe that cars of the Bavarian variety are a bit of a pig to maintain, and many dealer visits are necessary! I prefer to do as much work on cars as I can myself, so it's good to know that such a good source of information is available for people like me who prefer to twirl spanners and curse at inanimate lumps of metal rather than wander off to a garage.

I'm Steve, I'm 33, live in the New Forest, and no doubt going to be asking rather a lot of potentially daft questions. :

    Hello mate, welcome.

Take time (pref' work time) to make sure you read about he Nikasil issue and other common faults for cars of that age (on the forum) just to be on the safe side before you pick her up later - the info on the forum stopped me buying a pup at the last minute.

Def'n check idle speed is correct and STEADy and no nasty smoke on start-up or acceleration. Other than that make sure she feels tight to drive, they do when well maintained (play in steering/suspension etc).

That was my main field of research over the past few days.

It's in the service records that the engine was replaced, and it idles perfectly, so hopefully no problems there. It's survived into six figure mileage, so can't be too bad.

Only real fault is a non functioning fuel gauge, but I'll whip the senders out when I get it home and hopefully it's the usual loose wire problem.

Just as a quick update, picked the car up tonight and I love it already. Nice and smooth, and is a fair bit quicker than the figures made me think!

I shall no doubt take lots of pics when it's actually light enough to see anything out there.
