    how do you by-pass the egr valve on a bmw 320td compact e46.

    Remove the vacuum pipe fro the EGR & plug it with a golf tee, do the same to the male connection on the EGR (as in pic)
    or wrap electrical tape around the male connector, this stops anything entering the EGR valve.

    Do you know if your compact has the Euro3 or later Euro4 engine? the Euro4 will detect the EGR is deleted/bypassed and will illuminate the EML, the earlier Euro3 engine will not illuminate the EML if the EGR is deleted.
    It should state on your V5 document if its the Euro4, you can also visually check to see if the turbo is electronically controlled, Euro4.
    Or vacuum controlled is a Euro3 engine.
