I am new to the site and require the following advice :

I am considering the purchase of an e46 320 diesel and understand that there are some considerable problems with said engine, depending on the unit used.

Do i go for the M47D20, which is supposed to be trouble free, or the M47TUD20 which is supposed to have inherent problems.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

All post 2001 E46 320d have what is known as swirlflaps which can and do drop in to the engine, however they can also easily be blanked which removes the risk completely.

All BMW dervs suffer from blocked up EGR valves and filthy manifold and there is a know issue with the engine breather but it is easy to change for a more modern vortex style filter breather. Again one to check after purchase

Look for a good service history of oil changes and not nessecarily a BMW service history, the turbos on the 320d are very sensitive to oil changes and will go if not looked after properly

Other issues are more benign, the front suspension bushes have a habit of going at 100k bu otherwise a reliable car
