During the summer, i purchased a E36 328i Sport in blue with grey leather. Its a good clean car, interior is in decent condition and the exterior is alright. Body of the car seems good enough, it does have a bit of bubbling spot on the P/S rear arch and the same just under the boot.
My brother has owned a few BMWs and i always loved the shape of the E36, which basically made me want to buy one. Its mainly standard, only modifications it has is an induction kit (unsure of brand) and hella lights.
In the last 2 weeks, the engine has started overheating but hasn't actually reached the red-line. I checked the water and topped it up but i noticed some black goo in the water - looked like oil - so I'm guessing the head gasket is gone.
As i student, i travel to University during the weekdays so i cant afford to have the head gasket replaced. Also i spend quite a bit on petrol - 2.8 engines are thirsty.
I remember 5 years ago seeing an E36 coupe with a M51 engine conversion and thought it was awesome. Rather than having the head gasket replaced, i was thinking of doing a 325tds (M51) conversion myself, which is why i basically joined this forum.
I have tried to find more information and haven't found any completed conversions. Reason I'm thinking of doing this conversion is diesel will be a lot easier for me to run, plus i like Torque>Power.
Has anyone ever done any conversion like this before? - perhaps give me some idea of how complicated/easy it will be..
Some issues that i am aware of are:
- Fuel lines will need changed (Petrol to Diesel)
- Fuel pump will need changed
- Clocks will need changed (speedometer etc)
- Front springs - Diesel engine is heavier
- The diff will need changed due to ratio
Any information or help would be appreciated,
