Hello all. My name is Rich, I am from Birmingham and that will do from me.
I registered for some advice seeing as I've never owned a Bimmer before.

I've had my eye on the 316 mainly because it will be cheaper to insure and I like the look of the compact. My Corsa is too boring for me now, Im looking for something more grown up because I hate the "17 Year old driver" image I get purely for owning a car which has affordable insurance. (Im 22 by the way, just to clear that up)

Firstly, how reliable are they really? Obviously it depends on how well maintained it is but roughly when do the problems begin in terms of mileage? 80,000? 150,000?

Secondly, it is either a 316 or a Vauxhall Vectra. Same engine size, similar spec but a lot cheaper. The question is why? Is the BMW that much better and should I hold out for one....

Thanks for reading and hopefully by next year I'll have my motor!

welcome, just like you im new to bmw after driving rice grinders for years (100nx, 200sx and a supra) i bought a 316 compact sport and am loving every second of driving it, they do seem to need a little attention every now and then (but i bought one knowing it had issues which were fairly easily sorted) but the info is readily available thanks to the good ppl on this forum and parts arent stupiddly priced. As for the car itself its the most comfortable drive ive ever had and are quite easy to work on if u need to, i think the compact's are a bit like marmite u either hate them or u love them and the build quality of a bm will out do vauxhall all day long. This is all my opinion but im pretty sure u wont regret it :-)

p.s. im talking about the e36
