Hello to everyone on the forum!
Im a US service member stationed in Italy for the next couple of years and I have had my heart set on buying a turbo diesel BMW.
Since this would be my first BMW I would like any insight on the turbo diesels if anyone has any negative views or horror stories or maybe even postive stories to sway my me. Specifically im looking at the 318 TDS compact and The 525 TDS. But if anyone has any reccomondations on other models I would love to hear them!

    Thanks alot for reading.

    hi there,
I had aE39 1996 525tds for six yeras. I took the car up to 300 000 miles and only had to replace one water pump!!! It was on its original engine and turbo.....and the car had regular servicing with a good quality oil. They do suffer a bit with hot starting but this is easily cured with a reisitor which takes ten minutes to wire in and costs about 15 pounds. It was not the fastest diesel on the road but I had it chipped which made it faster. It was however very smooth and refined. Overall I have had several BMWs and the TDS was the best I have owned, hence keeping for so long. It went through the normal suspension jionts etc but nothing out of the ordinary. I drove the car hard and even when I sold it, it never used oil and still sounded as sweet as a nut...........
    Cheers
    Jim

    Thanks Jim!
That's what I needed to hear , I'm leaning towards a 318 compact because the streets here in Italy or horrible and small.
I have no idea why bmw never brought turbo diesels to the the US
