I don't know how you feel about advertising, but if you are experiencing high amounts of traffic you could easily monetise this site with some Google Adsense ads displayed in a few places on the site.

You could also easily set it up so that the google ads are only displayed to non-registered / non-logged in users.

Each time an ad is clicked, you make money.

Add in a few non intrusive CPA offers related to cars in general and you could easily make a LOT more than the £250 / month target you've set.

Ps. Hello everyone! i'm new here, getting a new 320d sometime mid december so i've been lurking for a while, i just thought i'd chime in with my thoughts, i'm an internet marketer and do it for a living.

I've also stuck my toe into the internet as a way of making money, not much luck yet but I keep trying and I agree wholeheartedly with the above post. Stick a few well chosen ads on the site and you will make your monthly target or go the Modaco forum way and add an ad free option where anyone contributing gets to view the site without ads and a few freebies as well.

Anyway I've stuck a tenner in the kitty to be going on with!

That's fair enough, and I understand your viewpoint. But like I say, you can set it up so that the ads are only displayed to non-members, those who are logged in wouldn't see any ads at all. This serves 2 functions, it makes you money from the people who are hitting your forum but not registering (and thus not contributing) and it also encourages those people to sign up so they can view an ad free site.

Don't get me wrong, I fully understand the ethos behind not placing ads on your site, been in the same situation myself. Although when I did try and monetize my site(s) to alleviate my bandwidth costs, I noticed zero impact on traffic, and I increased my member base as people registered to view the ad free site. In my case it's a win-win situation, I could afford to pay my bandwidth and have some cash left over which I spent on further advertising (adwords etc).

Anyways!, enough of my blabber! Lovely forum you have here, some real good info at hand and you seem like a good bunch, I'll be visiting regularly when I finally pick up my bimmer

I havent read the whole thread so sorry if this idea has been mentioned, im a member of a vw engine specific forum / oc and to help with costs they have a ''premium membership'' for £15 a year you get a sticker or tax disc holder and access to the premium members area (knowledge vault for tech stuff, member discounts and i think a chat area for things freebie members dont need to hear about).

I feel this may cause controversy regarding class divides and such but it provides an incentive to support the club for a modest outlay. Obviously the example price is not a suggestion, i dont know the running costs of this site and should be adjusted accordingly.

Thanks for listening and i will add my donation when i get back to work next week or so.

i completely agree! id be more than happy to pay an annual membership fee. i only joined yesterday and have already found some useful advice! plenty of other club forums charge £15 a year for membership, with incentives like a membership pack and a couple of stickers and what-not and appear to have no shortage of members. worth serious consideration in my oppinion!

Good call Ace, tbh I'd forgot my monthly dues so done my bit,
c'mon guys and gals we all know monies tight but we haven't even reached the minimum donation of £250 this month!

How long can the forums survive when we as members cannot even cover the running costs
