    Hi all,

I currently have a Subaru Impreza STI and as fun as it is i'm now thinking of changing it for something which is a little bit more comfy (god I must be getting old!!).

Anyway, I would really like an e46 M3 but for my budget (around 14k) they seem to be reasonably high mileage so im thinking of lowering my sights a little..... I have started to look at the e46 330 Ci (one here for example - http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1058007.htm) and just have a few questions on them:

    1) How many miles would I generally get from a full tank?

    2) What do they cost to service, and how often do they need servicing?

    3) Are there any common faults to look out for?

Would the 330Ci be a sensible choice or is there a better model for my money? I know they wont be the cheapest car in the world to run but cant be any more than the Scoob to run plus with the mods my scoob has a BMW should feel rather nice to drive.

    Appreciate any advice/info

    Cheers

hi and welcome mate..the 330ci is as far as im concerend a reliable and very trusted engine...i get between 360-420 miles per tank tho my mpg s low atthe moment..23mpg...shoukld be about 31...a few off the other members may help you with what too look for but in over a year off wnership i hav had no problems with it..i use my own mech...and a service..oil,oil filter.air filter..spark plugs and labour..£200...the car is dynamite...think the best off the 3series tho fo all round economy..value for money and prformance...the 323i or 325i would be amazing choices.

    Thanks for the info..

Sorry, as yet im not familiar with the differences between the models, how do the 325i compare to the 330's? Older/newer, better spec, quicker/slower etc etc??

all the 6 cylinder E46's (320,325 and 330) have similar sort of running costs (all cost the same to service etc) the 320 is alittle better on fuel but the difference in economy between the 325 and the 330 doesnt make up for the 40bhp deficit in power and the lump of torque although the 325 argubly revs cleaner and sounds better.
Its all very dependant on your driving though which will also factor in the servicing as it is condition based, drive it short journeys all the time and it'll need servicing more often than than if you do long journeys in it but budget for every 12-15k. prices of services depend on where you go but there are only 3 types, Oil Service inspection I and Inspection II (it goes oil, Inps I, oil, Insp II, oil etc etc). From a 330 you should see between 250-400 miles to a tank depending on your driving style etc.

Ive gotta say though mate if you have your heart set on a M3 you'll always be gutted you settled for a 330. Its an awesome car and the best all rounder ive ever owned but its not an M3!

I dont really have my heart set on an M3, although one would be nice , but for my budget it would probably have over 70k + miles on it which I wouldn't want so im not too worried. A 330 would do me fine

I have also been looking at the 330 Cd M Sport, performance wise they seem quite reasonable and not far off a petrol, anyone got a diesel M-Sport??
