I'm Wouter from Belgium, 28, and new here at the site. Currently I'm driving an Opel Corsa (I think it's sold in the UK as a vauxhall Nova) 1.2 from 1995. I'm going to replace it with a BMW E36 323ti compact this year.I'm going to take a lot of time searching for a good example and not buy the first (or cheapest) one that I find. My intention with this car is trying to make it an oldtimer, so when I'm older (and wiser), I could use it in historic races and such. I'm not planning in tuning it heavily, or use it a lot on track, just constantly keeping it in top condition, perhaps some minor mods like other intake, lighter wheels,...
So my question: are there any points I should I really should check. I have a decent knowledge about general car mechanics, so I'm familiar with the "normal" problems like smoke in the exhaust, rattles, chassisrust;... I'm looking for specific problems with this type of car. Things BMW didn't do well, how can I see abuse, bad maintance... Are there certain options that are worth a higher price or things I should avoid. I've read something about 2 different types of alloy used for the engine and one type shows signs of premature enginefailures. In general, I need good advice to find a car that will need to last a long time.
Thanks in advance for you answers and time and I hope everyone understands my English because it's not my native language.
