Hello from sunny Bude. I have just joined the forum as I am considering buying a 2003 320d saloon that is available locally. The car has done 125,000 miles with full service history. I am concerned about the possible failure of the turbo, but have also heard that change of oil breather filter and removal or changing swirl flaps can help. can anyone advise
    thanks

Changing the engine breather to a vortex type and removing the swirl flaps are an absolute must, you can't not do them however only the engine breather affects the turbo life span, the swirlflaps just wreck the engine.

The way to tell if the engine breather is affecting the turbo is leaving the car to idle for 3-5 minutes and then rev it, if you get a cloud of blue smoke if needs changing ASAP. The other thing that affects turbo life is oil changes, they like fresh oil on a regular basis so check that it has been done, DIY is as good as any as long it has never been more than 20k or 2 years between changed (10k servicing is much better though)

Sadly it is a bit a gamble, you could buy it and the turbo could pop next week or could last another 70k and the only real test is taking the turbo snorkel off and wiggling the turbo shaft
