Hi guys i'm looking to swap my fletcher speedboat for this:

    http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1072089.htm

I'm looking for a bit of info on the usual things to look out for as i'm new to the world of bmw's.

Heard problems to do with the vanos (sp?) system. I was looking at the front seats and shouldn't they be vader (?) style? Also is it really worth the money he is advertising it at?

Thanks for all the help as dont wanna have a bad start to bmw ownership cheers.

    James

Welcome, please can you check out the rules before your next post (http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...ement.php?f=69). This is the introduction section, tech questions belong in the tech sections. Bumping is not allowed either and expecting a reply within 30minutes is a bit optimistic.

Anyway, the vadar seats are only in the coupes. It's not a bad price but you could do better, especially with the broken roof.

Vano's is a pain in the arse but not as big a problem as some would let you believe. There are now options for cheaper replacement units from places like Dr Vanos and even if it does go wrong, unless it dumps all the engine oil it will just cost you power not prevent you from driving the car.

No idea about that car with out looking at it, but the saloons and convertables all came with sports seats rather than the vadars. Vanos is a issue and would need checking to make sure all is well with it, check all the history as these cars do need all there services.

archs is where the rust is, also on the boot around the lock/number plate.

Look for things like brake discs, how much longer do they have, the evo discs are fairly expensive if you go for gen BMW.

Then its really about condition, would be good to speak with BMW and the specialist they have used to clarify the service history

Primarily check for oil leaks and noise (rattling). Stalling and feeling a bit dead lower down are also symptoms.
