Hi this is my first post - Earlier this year I put my car on axle stands to change the AFT fluid in the gear box and also did a head gasket change - car has not been connected to battery since about April when I was taken ill and hospitalised - now I am trying to get car running again but I am having great difficulty - all the electrics are working but there is no power going to the starting motor on turning the key and also on the dash where it says park drive etc there is now a yellow gear cog symbol showing - does anyone know what this could mean - any help would be greatly appreciated - if this is posted in wrong place I apologise - from Roy

I'd say a missed plug on the gearbox somewhere, or the shifter lever.

It needs to be in park or neutral to start, so if it is missing the position signal, it'll refuse.

Thanks for the quick reply - on the gearbox there is a four pin round plug which I've plugged into its counter part on the engine block and even in park or neutral still no power going to starting motor on turn of key but all other electrics are working - many thanks again for your fast reply - any other ideas you have would be more than appreciated

Try shifting and shaking the shifter a few times incase some contact hasn't touched properly.
The yellow cog is the autobox warning / fault light, so something related to that has a problem which is inhibiting the starter.

    OK, you're getting there.

Next things to do would be to pull the fuel pump fuse or fuel pump relay and turn the car over a few times as it could be flooded.
If it is, without the fuel pumping, it'll slowly creep down from way too much petrol, often kick into life for a couple of revs as it passes through the sweet spot and then go back to not starting.
Give it another few turns with the pedal floored to air it out, then pump the fuse/relays back, switch the ignition on and off a couple of times waiting a second or two between them to prime the fuel system again (you might hear the tank pump buzz for 1sec each time) and then go for a longer start/crank.

The autobox is sensitive to voltage, so the light can come on when cranking. It might be a good idea to have another running car as a power supply. Hopefully it'll start, and the autobox light should go off after a couple of on/offs.
