    Hi I'm new to the forum, I did a quick diagnostic test on my 2005 120d yesterday and got a fault code 1278, any help on what this code is would be much appreciated

    hi, that number means next to nothing, best getting it plugged into some pacific BMW software that will give you a description of the fault, if its present, when it last happened ect ect.

    P1278 = BMW code 4B10 Smooth running control - Correction value too high.

    It is an injector issue, contrary to above you need to get the car on BMW DIS or INPA software and see the live IMA values, it might also need a leak off test if that proves inconclusive

    Saying DIS is best, Pacific will probably only give the the extended description and not the full IMA value etc. although could be wrong

    Diagnostics are often misleading anyway, seen far too many big tickets items such as ECU's been replaced by garages for folks in this forum in the past, people don't seem to look at whats wrong anymore, they just read the codes and start replacing bits.

    Its a bit like the chap with the replaced turbo where garage trashed his engine, it was smoking a bit at idle, in my book that is the usual engine breather problem not a dead turbo, but a wiggle of the turbo shaft would have given a better diagnosis
