Hi everyone
just joined this forum and im wondering without going the m3 route whats the best engine conversion for some torquey v8 power, love the idea of the E39 M5 engine but not sure how viable it is?really not interested in buying an m3 because i want something different, any contacts willing to carry out this conversion or offer any other suggestions would be much appreciated

Hello Mate,
I haven't seen the E46 with the M5 conversion but there are a few E36's with that conversion been done to them so am sure if you have the time, patience and money then it could be done another option is the 4.4 V8 from a 540,740 which I have also seen in an E36 with dry sump so I don't see why you cannot do this conversion in the E46

though i know very little about BMW engine conversions, when my sales manager got his 320D new back in 2004, the dealer had a factory ordered E46 M3 with an M5 engine fitted, apparently no one would buy as it was to more than a new M3, and also damn scary to drive!, this might sound a bit far fetched, but i was told it is 100% true!

My brother use to have a 4.4i V8 Sport engine in his 740i - excellent engine, loads of power.

Sold it to the owner of Ashford Motorsport - They do all these types of conversions and he told me he had a few of these engines in crates ready for future projects.

We spoke at length about projects he has done and got coming up, i would highly recommend this dude, he has really good knowledge of all cars and has a excellent portfolio of customers.

Hamman done a e46 with a m5 v8 a few years back, i will see if i can find a picture and specs of it. As far as i can remember they tuned the v8 to 480bhp and fitted gullwing doors
