Any recommendations for general work? I can't use the main dealer because they're not allowed to remove the swirl flaps from a 320d; the book only allows them to fit the redesigned manifold for £330 plus labour. There is an independent BMW specialist in Lydiard Millicent (no names, Google them if you like) but their customer reviews suggest I should run away from them very fast.

I can vouch for Emtec. Very very knowledgable, will give you a fixed quote, will explain everything that they are doing in nice easy terms and will give the care a health check while they have it and can provide a courtesy car if needed.

Thanks all. In the end I went to Alan Watkins in Cheney Manor, an independent garage. My car is now deflapped, has a clean EGR, various new vacuum hoses, fresh coolant, fresh diff oil, new glowplugs (might as well do them after 118k while the manifold is off) and an air filter. It was not expensive.

For what it's worth, removing the flaps has made this much difference to performance and MPG:

I'll fit them for £150.... live near Baydon and add £100 for a full manifold and EGR valve clean and another £50 a new air filter and engine breather (cost price)

Edit: Sorry missed you had done it, not to worry

I did the breather at the weekend, but didn't fancy the manifold.

As there is currently no blue smoke and no oil consumption and it sounds and feels right, I'm assuming the turbo is good and will last with suitable care. No idea if it's the original turbo.

I'll probably change the oil and filter again in a short while; rather than use a flushing agent I'd rather do two quick changes on a car with an unknown history. Currently it has Mobil 1 New Life in it (because that's what I had - it's LL01 and actually perfectly OK for petrol or diesel cars) but I'll put Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel in next time, in case it actually has any extra detergents. Rumour has it that the petrol and diesel versions of some big brand motor oils are actually identical but they like to know what sort of car their customers drive...
