I am new to owning a BMW and the dealer, bless him, said that I'd be surprised at how inexpensive BMW's were to maintain.

So imagine my surprise when I need the vehicle aligned (which incidentally wasn't done before the vehicle was sold to me and cost me a brand new tyre) I call my local garage, Rybrook Worcester and was told alignment would be £230 ish.

So I did a little research. Apparently my BMW needs weighted alignment using the KDS system.

I called KDS to get some garage names and then called the garages near me to get some quotes. The price seemed to be consistent:

    Rybrook Worcester - £230
    Sytners - Coventry - £230.30
    Sytners - Oldbury - £240.00

Incidentally al these garages refused to do the alignment in stages in the event that only one set of wheels needed aligning.

Then I called Cotswold BMW. They were very helpful and explained it is a two stage process, with the same equipment. If only front wheel adjustment is necessary it would be £130 if rear also an extra £76. Total £206.

Has anyone else had KDS alignment done?
    Is it always this expensive?
Can it be done in two stages?

Will that be ok for a new style 1 series? I've been told I should really have it done on KDS.

The KDS can be done in two stages, a/ measuring and b/ adjustment.

When carrying out adjustment on a vehicle with any equipment it is best to adjust the rear first because if that is not correct, the front will not be as accurate as it can be because it uses the front to rear alignment for setting the front tracking evenly.

i would just take it to a local garage with lazer alignment gear and get them to do it, should be around 60-80. seems KDS and BMW have some deals going on so thats why they recommend them.

You want to find garages that have a Hunter Laser alignment machine. It's close enough to be the real thing ...and oh yes, I've had my 120d aligned on one before

I am so pissed off right now. I had wear on the outside of my front two tyres and needed my tyres allignent done. I asked around Kwik Fit and Protyre near me and they wouldnt do it as they didnt have the KDS system or either enough weights or do newer BMW's before, or one Kwik Fit in Slough said that a specialist was needed to be called in to do it and it would cost me £120 as there was a sensor in my steering column (can some please verify this, as I think he was liying).

I then went to Feltham Tyre Centre in SLough as they said they do BMW 320d (2006) all the time, they used the Hunter machine and said my rears were not alligned properly either, so I got them to do it all. I told him that I think the car needed to weighted down, and he said that it wasnt necessary and that he did other ones without weights no problem, and that all manufacturers ask for them to be weighted down and it doesnt make a difference.

After making a few adjustments he goes that the rears are not being aligned properly and that he does probably need to weight the car down (Twat), and that he doent have enough weights to do it (Double Twat), so I though F***sake he changed all the alignment now on the front and rear fiddling around. I asked him how much weight he needed and he said 80 KG. I told him I weigh 100 KG will it do anything if its over to which he said no, and I sat in the open boot.

He did all the adjustments and got all of the stuff in the green even though one or two were right on the edge, he said it was within specification.

Had to go on a long drive today for training and when the steering is straight the car pulls to the left. When I let go of the steering the car pulls to the left.

I have now got to go again and get them to align it properly.

Long post I know, but could someone help me with what they think, especially about the steering column sensor thing, and also the weight be 80 KG, or if 100 KG would have been to much and cause a problem. Or also help in what I should do next or say.

I think I also hear noise when I'm driving.

Alignment? Is that where they hang the lazer things off your tyres? I had mine done at a cost of £30 at a local tyre place
