The problem is finding a good sparky who is up to speed on BMW's
(gear paddles not working is initial problem)

Its not hard to find a bad one even at the stealers , but a good is another story.
I take your point on sparkies generally not specialising on one make but some have more expertise than others.

Yeah i take your point but as i already stated there are good and bad but i guess that goes for any trade though.
I can't help with the paddle shift,I take it you've done the obvious and checked the fuses etc.
Just a thought but does everything else on the steering wheel work as i would suspect the contacts on the boss to be at fault if it's not fuses

Had all the obvious things checked and all OK, the garage who service the car are fantastic on basic stuff but are stuck now and honest enough to say. The auto electrician they use doesn't have the equipment and hates BMW's with a passion says they are worse than the Lancia's of old as far as electrics go.

Have you had the fault codes read for the transmission, there are a few forum members with the diagnostic tools to read the gearbox faults in various locations in Scotland, you might want to put out a request to see if somebody might help. Knowing if there are faults would be a good start, it could just be a switch fault or at worst the the gearbox controller is preventing all manual shift operation for some protection reason

How can he compare old Lancia electrics to a modern day Beemer
This will be one of the BAD sparkys as discussed earlier then

Well he says the modern day Beemers are crap as far as electrics go and don't compare favourably to build quality on Honda's which he rates. The reference to the old Lancia's was they were the worst for electronics way back and in modern day Beemers take the crown.
