I'm not sure if this is the right section to ask about this, but can anyone recommend a good BMW garage/mechanic in or near Preston?

    Here's my story:
The first mechanic I used was good and thorough, but did not have any specific knowledge of BMs, and in fact, he openly disliked BMWs. I asked him recently what needs to be done before the MOT and he says "Get a new car". This pissed me right off (especially that he thought his pitiful 2.0 Cougar was way better than my beemer - can you believe this?!). So I decided I won't be using him again.

Anyways, I had this collision, just a light bump, but as a result needed to sort my bumper and bits of front chassis out, went to another garage, where the owner at least appreciated that my car was a nice machine. Unfortunately, they did the paint job quite appallingly... I had to come back twice to sort things they missed (or messed up) and I'm still not 100% happy with the outcome.

Now, my car's due for an MOT this month, and also I want to get it serviced properly - but I don't want to take any chances this time... If you know of a good garage, where they know and like BMs, AND will charge me fairly - please do let me know. Any info will be appreciated.
    hello,

Nice to meet other BMW owners in the preston area. I have struggled finding BMW mechanics in the preston area to be honest. Off to http://www.brabbsmotorworks.co.uk/ in leigh next week so will let you know how that goes. Am getting gear oil and coolant change done £40 and £30 respectively.

Found any good mechanics in preston yet ?

Moghm - 'fraid not... The recent MOT cost me quite a bit, plus my car tax was due... So I'm leaving it till the next pay arrives.

I can tel you about the garage I used for my MOT, and a collision-related bumper repair before that. They're called "A & L Motors", located on Bold St, just off Aqueduct St.
    First, the good bits:
    - they seem to be reasonably cheap
    - the guys who work there seem to be decent enough folks
    - they sorted the bent front chassis alright (it got bent in collision - side impact on the bumper); also sourced and fitted Powerflex bushes for rear trailing arm - no complaints at all
    - they can get you laser 4-wheel alignment done for 30 quid

    The bad bits:
    - the paint job on the front bumper they did was abysmal . I could be skewed in my opinion here, as I used to work in a body shop as a teenager and I just know where to look. But that spray job was below even the lowest of standards: poor/no preparation, overspray, bits missed... you name it. Also, the bumper did not fit properly (it was slightly skewed) and it was from a different E36 (ie. not coupe); the headlamps they fitted were of two different styles (!), and the fog lamps were of two different styles as well (!!).

Now, to give them justice: after I had complained, they did sort much of the above out - BUT the paint job was still way below average, lamps were still different, and the bumper was still the wrong style (which, by the way, means I'm in the market for a new bumper now, as I liked the coupe-style one a lot more).
Unfortunately, they didn't bother to cover the car for spraying this time, so it got this fine spray paint "dust" stuck all over it (!!!).

I went back and complained about that after a few days (at first, I was hoping it was just normal dust and it would wash off), so they promised to sort this. And they did - by sanding it off with some fine-grit sanding paper ALL OVER the car, and all windows! Which means I'm getting really nicely blinded by glare now in the night, because the windscreen has these dense hairline scratches from sanding paper all over it. The same with paint job.

This time I did not go back to complain, because I was completely fed up and I suspected they might end up braking the car in half or something, while trying to sort it.

The owner explained to me, that he was under impression that I wanted to "get the car back on the road as cheaply as possible" and that was why they did the job like that, and that it would have cost a lot more to do it as nicely as I expected. While my understanding was, obviously, that his quote was for a job done properly.

All of the above is of course my opinion only - but I hope it helps...

I live in the preston area, I've tried a few garages nearby and there's a couple I wouldn't go back to...

On a more positive note, I went to S&J Motors on Ribbleton Lane, Preston for my MOT and they were really good. Not BMW specialists but I felt they had been thorough and seem to be a good set of blokes.

i know of an excellant garage in fleetwood which is probably a bit far away for you, they are not BM specialists but they are a v good garage, i always drive away feeling the difference instantly, incase anyone else is near me http://www.jamesjacksonscentralgarage.com/

There is a BM specialist in blackpool near the airport but i cannot vouch for how good they are maybe someone else can?

i only know of one good body shop and thats in fleetwood also, infact my car is there today , they are not cheap but all the other body shops near me are rubbish, seen alot of friends have poor work done and to be fair, most of them, have got what they paid for, but not all.
