Hopefully this will be of benefit to someone as I did search for these two garages on here but couldnt really find anything...

Firstly my 1999 bmw 1.9 compact seems to have a very intermittent (once or twice a month) starting problem, so I took it to e tech in Havant. They did a diagnostic check (which isnt cheap at 45 quid), replaced a couple of parts (cam sensor and breather valve + piping) as they were both showing fault codes. All codes cleared and off I go a couple of hundred lighter...

The problem was still there, albeit not quite as bad so I took it back and told them that it hadnt sorted the problem. The maf sensor was then replaced with was another 200 quid, after telling me that this frequently causes this kind of fault and that the problem will be sorted. They said that this was a fault that hadnt come up on the original fault diagnosis but it had registered up to sixty times??

Again the problem is still there so I take it back for the third time. They tell me that there are no fault codes but (without my approval I might add) charged me another 120 quid to reprogram my dme as this quite often causes these faults. But then they told me that its probably damaged anyway and that I should try replacing it??!! Plus on my receipt it said that the diagnostic check was showing a specific problem with the dme despite telling me that it didnt come up with any codes which I dont really understand. They told me a secondhand dme plus programming would be at least 300 quid. At this point I said thanks but no thanks and walked away.

Now a few months later I have taken it to a different bmw specialist, APM motors in Waterlooville, who for a much more reasonable 29 quid have done a diagnostic check. I showed them the receipts of the work carried out by e tech and they informed me that reprogramming the dme was a total waste of money and this fault was never going to be the maf sensor anyway as the car will run fine with it unplugged, and it is not a symptom of sensor failure anyway. Rather than just being interested in parting me with his cash he gave me what I think is the honest advice I needed in the first place and either live with it until it gets worse, or have a check on ebay for some cheap parts such as a fuel pump and crank sensor. He didnt want to go and replace parts when it was simply guesswork as to what it might be, rather than e tech who would appear to be more than happy to do this

So APM motors seem to be a reasonably priced garage and helpful as well. It wasnt just a case of reading the fault codes and parting me with my money. He cleared the faults and then spent a good half an hour starting it over again to try and get to the bottom of it for me.

As for E tech, not so good in my opinion....

Thanks for the info on the Garages in Hampshire, I will continue to use my local Autocentre in Basingstoke, I've not used them for the E46 as yet, but they did quite a bit of work on my old E36 saving me hundreds of pounds in the process

Have you heard about Never despair / Kings motors?
On the road between Odiham and Alton.

I had my various cars there with no probs.

    Hi Ya

If you fancy a drive into Wiltshire (Salisbury).....then http://www.emtecsalisbury.com/ is a very popular place and my parents have used it for a few years and have been happy with the service.

I've been using iridium (can be found on google) in bittern for a while. Fantastic service and a good price too.
I haven't taken my e46 to him yet but that more down to moving out of Southampton and up to Basingstoke. I will be taking the car there for it's service in a month or two though.

    Cheers

    Jon

well after having a few running problems with my car i called APM Motors at 1pm today to see if they could run a diagnostics on my car.
they said they close at 12pm but they would wait for me if i went up there straight away.

got there at 140pm and they plugged in the car to their mobile diagnostics machine and checked fault codes, cleared them and then let it run for 5 mins and checked fault codes again and nothing had appeared. check the live reading from most sensors etc, sprayed brake cleaner solvent (i think it was) around air flow meter, vacuum hoses, choke unit, all round inlet manifold etc.

couldnt find the exact fault but said the lambda sensor may be the fault and the ecu may be ignoring it and making up the figures if lambda is faulty.

very happy with the service from Alan. he said if i phoned up in a week or so and asked for him i could have it plugged back in for free to see if any new codes had been logged.

i think i have the old lambda somewhere to swap over to see if that is causing my problems, just a case of finding it.

all in all with free check up in a week or so it cost me £20 + vat (£23.50)

if you are from the portsmouth area i recommend the garage, cheap, friendly and know their stuff.
