hi i have just brought a 1984 e30 316i auto and havnt yet been to pick it up but have been made aware of the fact that it wont select 3rd 4th or 5th i have also read somewhere that if a problem ever occured then it may of entered a fail safe "get you home mode" which can be deleted within the fault memories, any ideas guys and gurus? does anyone recommend an auto specialist in or around the hertfordshire area? failing this an nice simple engine transplant like a 2.5 with new box will be on the cards, or 535 donor car will have to be sourced!

The 316i in my opinion is rather slow. Add to that an auto box and youll need a calendar to time your spirited 0-60mph run. I wouldn't waste my time with that lump, faffing around trying to get the box sorted. It could be something simple or it could be something like a replacement torque converter but either way I'd think about the 2.5 lump from an E30 which although a bit of a rattler is a great silky smooth lump.
They can be had off of eGay for very little- in the region of 200 quid for a lump. There is a forum called E30 zone that has plenty of threads for pople doing this conversion.
