Was the engine sold as a recon unit or just an engine out of xxxx ?

If it's a recon i can see your point about the HG being blown, it should be brand new if recon'd. If not then shiate happens i guess.

Latest on this. Spoke to consumer direct and they suggested writing letters, the first constructed as to what is wrong, the second (depending on reply which was we want the engine back to see if there is anything wrong, therefore incurring more costs) was suggesting that a 3rd party inspection engineer looked at the engine, after they replied stating their T&C's...we're not liable for any consequencle loses etc etc. Yeah, ok, this might be fine if under your T&C's you supplied me with a running engine that had been tested prior to shipping.
Anyway had an independant inspection done today by a mechanic who by all intent and purposes is an agent of the courts. He concluded exactly the same as my mechanic that either the head gasket is blown or the head is cracked, the engine was supplied unserviceable and should never have been sold.
I now have grounds to collect money for the engine, labour costs, hire car costs, and loss of earnings through days off work. This will be done through the small claims court if the supplier doesn't play ball.

Once the dust has settled on this I will name and shame because they have been (insert appropriate mis-use of the english language here) over this.

Well done fella, don't forget to charge for individual letters also. The T&C's they refer to are meaningless in a court of law. Keep us up to date on this and fingers crossed you get an out of court settlement, most people will fold before it hits the small claims court - even faster when you tell them you are going to fastrack also

Muppets who sell this crap should be put out of business permanently

I always though a short engine did not include the cylinder head, just the block and its internals.

    Congrats on the outcome

I don't think it would be fair to now name and shame publically although I will tell people in PM.

No should still name them, as they should discribe the goods what they selling as clear as possable, any miss leading or selling what is no discribe is no no no.

I personal hate company doing just that.

We as a consumer shouldnt take any risk when buying form uk company, we are protected.
