Just a quick question - my mate booked his M3 into a well respected indy this week for some AP Racing brakes and a few other bits - about £3.5k in total. However the dealer wants a £1000 deposit in advance of the works - is this normal?

The indy isn't exactly small, so it surprised me a bit. Anyone care to comment?

Depends i guess if he's a regular, our company always take a deposit for works, stops any hassle with payment or cancelling when the parts have been ordered and you have money sat on the shelf doing nothing.

Yeah, totally normally - they probably get a lot of chavvy time wasters who ring up - but never end up bringing their cars in.

A grand sounds fair, it's not like they're asking for 100% up front.

Good idea IMO, if the parts need to be specially ordered in then it ensures the customer doesn't stitch them up.

As mentioned, quite normal practice when unusual/specialist parts are involved.

Even when people phone us for tyres, on some specialist fitments (where a certain size only fits one particular car and its expensive) we take a desposit as many people ring, say they want it and then never show, leaving us with stock that we can't retrun etc.

We also take a £250 flat deposit on all AP racing applications. This confirms that the customer is genuine etc.

I suppose its understandable if dealers have to order in specials, but just for the craic, I'd be asking them for a receipt for my car when I dropped it off to have the work done

I left a holding deposit of £1k before I went to see the car. Fully refundable if you test drive and don't like the car.
