I recently purchased a 320d m-sport tourer (07 plate) and would like to talk about my experience with Z-CARZ Peterborough (as you can guess it wasn't great).
Firstly “touch wood” the car has been fine i.e. no major mechanical or electrical concerns so no problems there. However I have experienced some niggly issues which I fully expected to have rectified from the dealers 3 month warranty. First I discovered one the front tyres was below the legal limit (discovered on day 2 of purchasing the car) I called The dealer and he offered £25 towards a part worn replacement or I drive the 150 miles to his garage and have a part worn tyre fitted.. The following day the driver’s side door lock failed so back on the phone to the dealer and again a very similar response, he can supply the part and £25 towards the labour cost as that is what he would pay at "his" garage, the second offer was to come up to his garage and have the whole lot i.e. tyre/lock replaced.
So decided to take the car to him and visit some family nearby for the day. Dropped the car off at the garage which I must admit it looked a right s**t hole, couple of blokes just sat around scratching their a**e or any other orifice they could fit a finger in. It really didn’t look like a trustworthy or even legitimate business, I could well be wrong but first impressions are usually right or not far off the mark. Anyhow as long as they fixed up the car I wasn’t too worried. They replaced the tyre but the dealer had ordered the wrong lock… so really the day was a complete waste of my time a day’s holiday and the £30 or so of fuel I used to get there and back.
I have now been chasing him for around 5 weeks to get a replacement part sent to me and I have had every excuse out of the book, courier lost the parcel, been on holiday blah blah blah. The part finally arrived this weekend, but on opening the package I just laughed.. He had ripped some ropey old lock out of an old BMW (I’m guessing from a scrap yard). I expect this part costs no more than £40 to buy brand new yet he spent weeks and weeks with me phoning him every 3-4 days, bear in mind I couldn’t secure the car at night hence the constant badgering.. From his side it was all a bit embarrassing. By the way he still hasn’t transferred the £25 towards my labour cost to have this fitted, somehow I don’t think I will ever see it…
The point I am trying to make is I am happy with the car but the after service was absolutely shocking. Luckily for me I did not have a major issue if I had I dread to think of how it would of panned out. His warranties are simply not worth the paper they are written on unless you are prepared to chase and chase and when he does try to sort it out don’t get too excited!
A large proportion of the vehicles he sells range between £8k - £15k, if you’re prepared to spend that kind of dough and risk what happens after then that’s up to you. Don’t get sucked in with the snazzy website because the business is just not that, I thought I was dealing with a BMW specialist but it’s no more than your average back street dealer (and that’s been kind!).
The biggest lesson I learnt from this experience is to make sure warranties are covered by an independent insurer; I thought I would pay a slightly higher premium from a dealer so I had that cushion if anything major happened in the first 3 months. Anyhow that’s my story with K-carz, good luck!
