Just taken my car into Wellsway, Bath, to have the offside rear window regulator fixed, as the window was stuck open and wouldnt close.
I had a feeling it was the regulator, and i'm sure the mechanics in wellsway were 95% sure it was this. Yet i'm being charged half an hour's labour for diagnosis. I dont remember being charged for this before when i've taken my car there (or anywhere else for that matter), for instance when i had brake issues and needed new rear discs and handbrake shoes...
Do i have a case for refusing to pay this charge?

And incidentally, the price i was quoted for the job was £290 in total (including diagnosis). This seems excessive for one window regulator.

question for trading standards tbh...if you didnt fix a price before work commenced then afaik they can charge what they like.
    what i've felt,what i've known
never shined through in what i've shown.

If they plugged it in to the diagnostic machine to find/confirm the fault then yes you have to pay.

Now you know the cause get on to Quarry Motors or similar breaker yard and get a second hand unit

I don't think you have a leg to stand on with regards to non payment for the diagnostic scan

Well i was told they stripped the door apart to find out, not that a scan had been done. If it was a scan, that would have taken about 2 minutes to plug a laptop in and find out, so i wouldnt have a problem with that. Seems i'm being charged half an hour's labour for something that could have been diagnosed electronically.

I run a small Workshop and can relate to what you are saying but also can relate to the Garage in question, What if it were not your regulator and they purchased and fitted one just because you said it was, Would you not then be pissed off at that They assume as you have taken it to them that you do not know enough to do the job yourself so may not know enough to diagnose the problem, In all fairness it could have been a number of other things and would be an expensive mistake. You should always agree a price before letting anyone carry out any work of any kind on anything, Not just your car!

If you take your car to a garage you cannot expect them to diagnose a fault with your car and not charge for it???

Look at it from this point of view. You get three customers that all need fault finding work done on it, half a day is taken on the three cars. All customers are not charged, advised of problem and price and none of them return to have the work carried out???

I'm afraid I'm missing the problem but then again I do all my own work as I be grudge letting anyone else work on my car

Why should the garage spent half an hour stripping the door down and not charge for it...
They have spent there time diagnosing the problem.

    Completley fair IMO...

As i said, when i had my brakes done, i dont remember being charged for diagnosis. And secondly, i just thought £290 seems a lot for one window.

You only have to remove the wheels to see the brakes.
It could have been a few faults with the window. Power supply, glass clips, etc..
Needs to be stripped out to find out the fault.

The regulator and motor are nearly £180. So say an hour and half labour + Vat.
Not over the top price really.

    Wellsway are a BMW dealer.

You may get the odd favour thrown in by small loyal companies but not these guys

I have used Wellsway in the past and their service was good and my visit involved having to arrange for the Coupe to be transported their and back so that the EWS module could be replaced and programmed to the car
