Unfortunately, the box on my 2001 530 has packed up after 144,000 miles. It's slipping in every gear and eventually crashes into limp mode, where it stays in 4th gear and runs fine. I've had it checked for electrical faults and leaks and I'm told it needs replacing. The oil's like treacle apparently and has iron filings in it.

After having various dealings with incompetent breakers when trying to find a second-hand box, I've decided to go for a reconditioned one. However, after my recent experiences I need somebody who is competent and who I can trust. Can anybody recommend a good source for a reconditioned box?

    hi Daveyboy

    What breakers have you used?

I would recommend trying Quarry Motors in Sheffield....

Or if they dont have one try FAB direct (google it)

I have used both of them many many times and they are both very professional and supply quality parts.

If your still not keen on the breakers route, I have heard that KN transmissions are good.

    These guys Gearbox recon

If I was you I would have your OWN gearbox reconditioned because then you know what you've got and what you will end up with.

BMW trannys are generally very hardy and I find it unlikely that it will be beyond economical repair
