Like I said I got a "full 4 wheel alignment on a hunter machine" for £50 cash with a place called Orchard Motors in south wales..

They are no tyre monkeys like the lot you find in discount tyres, ATS etc.. Infact they are specialists with german cars and have years of motorsport experience so they know there stuff and did a fantastic job of setting my last car up after lowering and other suspension changes.

I think a lot of it is down to area, E.g in london I'd expect to pay more..

But.. I would never pay £200 to a dealer unless I had no other options within a reasonable distance to myself!

I had my car 4 Wheel aligned using a Hunter machine for £40. Yes, £40. That was mates rates i might add.

The same company does wheel alignment for a local VW main dealer and charges them something similar. However, VW charge their customers £100 for every car they send down. Feel sorry for the unware customers, does good to shop around.

I've got a quote of £70 plus vat from a company in Norwich. Not far from me and super low cars aren't a problem. I don't think that's too bad.

Possibly a silly question but when should you do a wheel alignment?

Does it make sense to get it done and then change the tyres in a few months to winter tyres or newer tyres or does this have nothing to do with it?

Once done can you change he alloy/tyre combo and in a few months go back to the old alloy/tyre combo without having to get a realignment done?

If you read the blurb at the alignment centres they usually recommend checking the alignment every 12k
which on one hand makes perfect sense due to wearing steering components and any slight knocks you may incur
on the wheels, but thats another £100 (on average) to shell out!

Mine goes for alignment after any suspension and steering work done so is best to get as much of that work done at the same time.
If it drives ok prior to changing tyre/alloy combo and its ok after I personally wouldn't bother.

    hello mate (mines a '97 E39 2.8i)
I'm really new to all this stuff & no fountain of knowledge
but I'm looking at new tyres & obviously having the front two re-aligned
the name HUNTER seems to come up a lot from those "in the know" here
and also one of this sites recommended garages is Elite in Rainham Essex
I phoned them and they quoted me £ 39 inc VAT ( excl any additional work...)
I repeated it all back to him just to make sure - yep £39 inc VAT
granted this is for the front two only
but -AND I MAY BE WRONG HERE- do the back two really need doing ??

Hunter is the most common alignment machines that is capable of full 4 wheel alignment.

£39+vat will be to check the geometry settings on the Hunter machine then as you say you'll pay for any adjustment required.

YES the rears do need checking and adjusting, do not confuse this type of 4 wheel alignment with tracking see the link below for full details http://www.alignmycar.co.uk/WheelAli...wheelalignment

I got a 4 wheel alignment from a Subaru specialist in Falkirk. They have the latest kit took em about and hour and a half and it cost me £65. Computer printout. Happy with how it drives. Time will tell if it has done any good. Slight mpg improvement.
    Regards

Just for reference the Hunter machines aren't the be all and end all, you will find that some Hoffman, John Bean, and even Snap- On machines are exactly the same just with a different badge on so when ringing around just ask what they use, as I say any of those machines (up to date models of course) will do exactly the same job, as previously said I would say a lot has to do with the operator.
