Hi, new to this forum today, hope someone can help me decide how to approach my predicament.
I noticed a rattling sound that seemed to be coming from under the car, prop-shaft area, it got progressively worse over the space of a week and my wife took the car to Halfords for them to diagnose the origin of the sound. They came back with prop-shaft centre mount and front donut. After looking online this seemed to make sense, I priced the parts at GSF at about £90 but after looking on Youtube decided I had neither the time nor inclination to attempt removing exhaust and all the rest with no car lift or ramps. Halfords did the job, costing me £285.
A couple of days later I noticed a clunk just after the clutch had reached biting point, this clunk happens now on every gear change and there is an oil/grease stain on the drive about below where the diff is.
I then returned the car to Halfords, they put it on a lift and showed me some extensive damage to where the prop-shaft goes to the diff. With a concerned looking expression on his face the manager told me they had not realised the extent of the damage while working on the shaft and priced me £500 for the rear section from BMW. The manager said I shouldn't pay that and I should go looking around scrap yards for this part!
Is this damage due to poor re-fitment of the prop shaft? It cant have looked like this when it was fitted can it, please help
