    Hi,

I am having problems with my brake / reversing and fog lights.

Last week only the reversing light on the drivers side was working, also the side light and brake light was dim. A few days ago the bulb error messages appeared. I changed all the bulbs and now only the reversing light on the passenger side works!

I have checked on this site and found out it may have been the ground/negative. One side is has a small amount of burn but not that much.

I contacted the only BMW specialist I knew and popped down to see him as he was certain he knew what the problem was. He was going to charge me £160.00 to replace all bulb holders / connectors and run a new negative wire. When I arrived he changed his mind and wanted me to pay £175.00 an hour for him to run some tests before any work was carried out!

Having spoken to a few other people on the phone, it doesnt appear that they have a clue what they are looking for. It seems they want to charge me just to read the faults from there machine and not delv into finding the problem.

Does anyone know of a garage / person who will be able to identify the problem and charges a reasonable amount? I honestly dont think £175.00 an hour is reasonable!

Hi, Many thanks for the information. Unfortunately one of those shops mentioned tried to overcharge me!

I had a little play around on Sunday and have managed to fix the fog lights and reversing lights. For some reason, if I create a ground between the reversing lights, all is well!

The only issue i have now is that the off side sidelight is very dim. Not sure if it will pass the MOT??

I think i'll give it another go this weekend and if no luck, will contact the other company mentioned.

if your car is a facelift model ie the 2.0L 318 then youve probably got an earthing issue with the rear tailights! almost everyone seems to get it and its an easy diy fix. Yes the dealer would replace the whole unit instead of bodging in a fix but it WILL only go again. Take a look at this http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...or-fix-t49882/

Many thanks. That is the thread I looked at on the weekend! I do have a small burn mark on the bulb holder but nothing as bad as the picture in the thread.

I have a june 2001 model, the one with separate front indicator lights and the rear indicators are at the top of the units.

My bulb holders does not have a tab so I was planning on fixing with a self tapping screw like another mentioned.

Hope this fix works, cars driving me mad. Had to replace all the tyres, brake pads, front wishbones, rear shocks, all in the space of 6 months! I wouldnt mind soo much but I only do 15 miles per day on a smooth road surface!

I also have a coolant leak but will try and fix it myself in a couple of weeks, I have seen the thread on how to repair.

Just checked the www and looks good. Will give them a call tomorrow. A colleague at work has a Golf and asked me what Service Now meant on her dashboard so will arrange a service for her through Boxer!

Many thanks for the tip, nice and close plus they seem to do some good stuff!

Neal - these guys look to good to be true - but i'm tempted to try them next time.
Birds were good and very very local - but i didn't like the owners (Frank Bird) attitude when speaking about an additional problem that was found. It was all money centric rather than customer facing
