Hi, I'm new to this forum. I bought a 1998 535i last year. At the time of purchase I was told the airbag light (that was on) would be fixed by the seller's mechanic "updating the ECU". When I took ownership of the car, the light was turned off so I assumed everything was ok. Turns out that in order to "fix" the problem, the mechanic actually just smashed one of the micro-LED lights in the intstrument cluster unit.

I have now had the fault (relating to seatbelt pre-tensioners) corrected and the car is not showing any faults on the auto-diagnostics, however, I still don't have a working airbag light, which I will need to fix before MOT time.

The rest of the unit is working fine, so I don't really want to replace the complete unit. As I see it, these are my options:-

    1. Replace the unit from BMW - will cost £600 (not far off what I paid for the car, so not an option!)
    2. Replace the unit with a second hand one
    3. Remove LED bulbs from a second hand unit and replace in my current unit (expensive option still for just one bulb!)
    4. Buy a new LED bulb

Clearly, my starting point is at point 4. Does anyone know where I can get hold of these, or what their part number is (or even if other manufacturers make them for other cars...I don't care so long as it fits/works!). Or does anyone happen to have one that they could sell me please? I have searched endlessly on the internet but to no avail....but they must exist somewhere...right?

    Any answers greatly appreciated.

Loving every minute of my E39 V8...just need to get this last problem fixed!!

    Cheers
    Nick

It's getting more common, it isn't the first time I've heard of an E39 with a led ripped off.
There's probably a good chance you could nick an LED from a different pad for something unused, ie if there is a diesel glow plug light.

Thanks TheEnd, not a bad idea...you mean another light on the dashboard less critical?

Yea, you might find there is another SMD led on the board which will be exactly the type you need, but for a light that you would never have on your car.
