Heres a bit of info from the dvla.....i've never heard of anyone getting points and it appears that after a warning and on the spot fine if you dont get the plates changed and get caught again then it could be points aswell...guess a lot depends on how you act when getting pulled..

Today it was announced that on-the-spot fines for illegal number plates are to double from £30 to £60.
The DVLA are very specific as to how a legal number plate should be displayed - including font, letter size, and spacing.
This includes failure to conform with rules on font, size and colour of number plates. The use of illegal number plates can have a significant impact on criminal investigations and crime detection.
say the DVLA.
The fine could be in addition to a 3-point penalty on your license. Repeated offence could even lead to the registration number being confiscated.
:( i tried making it smaller by cutting the pic down but when i put it on the forum it just enlarged to the size of the screen..any clues how to keep it 1 page width?
EDIT: done it!
You'd have to be really abusive to the old bill to get points I would think, on a good day you'll prob just get a warning espically if you have the originals in the boot that you could swop, on not such a good day £60. Would have to be very extreme to get points.
For a first time, one off 'plate ticket, you'll either get a VDRS which means you need to rectify the issue and take your car to a MOT test centre and have them certify this is the case
You'll get a £60 fine.
This talk of points for plates in the real world is nonsense.
Everyone knows when they are taking the mick so if you're tear-arsing down the high street or something you will be more likely to get the fine as you've already demonstrated you're an arse so will just a warning do?
And to those who talk of discretion - it's one of a coppers biggest strengths, but can also be a weakness in some ccircumstances - the debate could go on forever about how, why and when to use it.
put front 1 on but keep back as your original that way mr policeman only sees legal plate
