hand wash and wax once a week, polish once every three months unless it needs doing due to marks in the paintwork, wax will not harm the paint finish and if you keep a good coat of wax on there it can stop minor marks from affecting the paint.

bear in mind most marks like swirly scratches are caused by incorrect washing, always use plenty of water to lift the dirt and rinse it off.

There are a lot of polishes that contain chemical cleaners and will not remove any element of the clearcoat, these are generally called paint cleansers, this you would apply before a pure wax or sealant.

Given that the order is clay, polish and then wax, thereafter, do you just need to apply a layer of wax every month or so, and then annualy, do the whole process again?

I do probably 20/30 dry miles a week (sometimes less) so after a good polish/wax every 4/6 weeks I get away with just a shampoo and shammy every weekend

It's normally only washed when it's dirty and a polished/waxed when the it's a nice day!

This is pretty much what i do.

I wash it weekly with wash and wax stuff [CarPlan Triplewax at the moment] and chamois dry. With the wax that is already on, it comes up nice and shiny again.

If the weather is good and ive got the time i might add more wax on after a wash, but once every 3 months for wax is enough if you use a decent car shampoo that doesnt strip the wax off your car. ie washing up liquid will remove the wax.

Since I've discovered this website, I've become even more obsessed with cleaning my car...

I tend to give it a proper cleam ever couple of months (i.e. wash, polish, two coats of sealant and then a coat of wax) and in between that its either just a weekly wash and a chamois, or a quick layer of top up wax to keep it looking shiney and nice. TBH, its generally better kept in the summer as I have more time and its nicer doing it than in the winter....

I'm a bit fussy when it comes to my car, so I don't like driving round in it when really filthy. Normally I wash the car myself every 1 or 2 weeks. For the last year or so, I've been spending most of my time away from home, so tend just to go to local hand wash place every couple of weeks, even though I don't tend to drive car as much as i used to.

About twice a year though, I tend to give my car a good seeing to, so to speak
This normally involves a single layer of sealant and wax, but this time round I'll be going bit further. Like Sam_C says, this is due to reading stuff on this forum and a few other car detailing sites.

I'll be applying polish, sealant and probably couple layers of wax.
I'll do this at Easter and probably do another one just before winter, probably doubling up the layers of sealant in the process.

    Emaps remapped
