I was looking at getting one of these but I decided not too because with the arm rest down it would be quite awkward to get to your can of pop out. I got one of these instead http://www.autouseful.co.uk/producti...?productid=448 I put it on the left hand middle air vent. It is at the perfect height. It looks quite good too, Its got a flap that lifts up so you can put cans, coffee and bottles in and it holds them secure.

I had one in my first e46 and the armrest does foul them. I didn't take them out when I got my second e46 which kind of tells a story.....
