When I bought my E60, it had been fitted with window tints.

Checking the cars history, I found it was a Diplomat car, ie with a D plate...which I assume is why it has darkened windows.

I want to check if they are legal... and I *think* you must have 70% light pass (VLT) or better to be legal?

I have a light meter, can I just use that and work out the percentage reduction?

I would hate to get a ticket/points/fine for windows that are too dark!

I did think of speaking to a Traffic cop and getting them to test it...with the hope that a consensual test would not get me the fine etc!

asking the police to check the tints sounds like a responsible measure. go to the local station and ask for assistance

my previous E46 had darkened windows, which Bmw tinted.
I was pulled by a traffic cop, all the internal was black too so made it look darker.
The light meter showed only 69% light passing through my front side windows.
My fine was £30, no points, just advised to remove as illegal.
informed my insurance company of penalty, but said were not interested as no points added.
Have since sold my car with the tints!
Have had my latest E90 tinted, but not the front side windows, staying legal.

Unless i'm mistaken, most cars these days come with very slightly tinted glass as standard which are very close to the legal limit already, so even having a "light smoke" on the fronts would push them over.
My brother is a professional window tinter so i know the info is good.
    Meh....

Rear windows (behind the B pillar) are fine to be tinted limo black. Front windows have a limit of light they have to let through as mentioned. Car glass is naturally tinted and the legal limit of light is normally just enough to allow for this and slight variations between manufacturers. Not sure how BMW do it you might just have to peel a film off the inside of the glass, although Crysler from memory actually smoked the glass making it impossible to remove on that PT Cruiser.

**UNOFFICIALLY** It used to be (whether still is the case I am not sure) that so long as coppers could see the driver and whether they were wearing a belt or on their phone they were OK, although obviously if the copper hadn't had a bit recently they could still do you. A bit like doing 80 on the motorway.

    Please Say Thanks!

what windows have the tints? if you complied with the police, all you would be handed now is a VDRS form ( vehicle defect rectification scheme)

You then have 7 days to rectify defect and take it to an MOT centre, after which no prosecution. I wouldn't worry about it, then if you do get pulled over (unlikely) you'll get a VDRS form.

My wife was stopped by the Police at a road check (they were waving certain cars in), they had a tow truck there also to seize cars. We had Limo tints on the back and darkened front-side glass (not windscreen), the tint shop assured me they were legal.

Anyhow they weren't and failed the test with the light metre. The Officer was being a bit obnoxious and luckily the tow truck guy told my wife to remove the front tints there and then because the old bill were going to seize the car apparently and he helped take them off. It made a right mess of the glass.

So, you can and will likely be stopped at some point, although it took four years before anything happened to our motor.

That is true, Cheshire Traffic Police informed me, if the tints were very dark and failed the light test on the front side windows, or windscreen they had the authority to seize a car at the scene.
Or remove the tints immediatley providing it was safe to do.
I was stopped on a very busy motorway at peak time, my speed was only 65-70mph when passing the X5!!
They also informed me they are having a big clamp down especially in Cheshire and Lancashire, and other counties.

There will be a film, but if it's a good job you won't see where it ends. Might need to get a razor blade to cut it.
