Hi all looking at buying a e46 coupe, it's got 2 rust spots, both spots are on the drivers sill, above the side skirt, I'm just wondering how treatable is this? Or by time you see it there is it too late and it will be pretty bad once the skirt is removed and that's just the tip of the iceberg? Don't mind if I can drop the price to rub down, treat with rust bullet or such, and then repaint, but if that's gonna be worse under I'll avoid completely thanks

Repairing rust reminds me of the old phrase about speed being a question of money , how fast do you want to go ?
Tbh the rust you have got in the picture isn't anything to be to worried by, however you will only know the true extent of the repair required
when you remove the paint on the affected areas and give the metal work a good prod with something metal and pointy.

If you dont end up with swiss cheese after doing the above then you should be ok to sand off the rust back to fresh metal and paint.
If your left with holes then its time to cut out the rotten area and weld a patch in.

You can bodge holes with fibreglass etc but the repair will only last X amount of time.

its doomed already yal never stop it in those areas without serious money spending...

ya can stall it by retreating etc but yal never stop it...if ya can get it cheap and just stall the advance ya may get a couple of good years out of it. ive owned mine 14 years the last 2 to 3 years ive bin in corrosion damage limitation mode i as there is nor real point in wasting money on summat thats worth nothing these days...

get it cheap, manage it and enjoy it...

PS: there looks to me to be evidence of old repaint in those piccs to me so be mindful...
330i sport a big chunk of berlin...

You should count yourself lucky, if you were looking at similar age jags you could be looking at structural repairs !
Eliminating rust rust by cutting out and letting in new metal only costs big money unless your handy with metal/paintwork.

Here's a couple of old rustys ( non BMW ) that i did earlier , that still look as good today as they did when i finished them.
