I always thought the facelifted saloon/touring headlights looked like (exactly what they were, really) and afterthought.

The "flame" styling doesn't suit the typically "euro" lines of the rest of the car, IMO

Looks almost like there were three versions to me as the pre facelift appears to have 2 scallops, one below each light, where as my mates old 51 plate E46 M3 seems to have the ouside scallop straighten out at the lowest point.

So are we debating which one of the three or which pre facelipf is best or is it an optical illusion?

    That's right E36Coupe328
There were two different styles to the pre-face lift cars - one for the coupe/M3 and one for the saloon/touring. Main differences were headlights/indicators and grill - they are a bit taller on 4 door cars. (hence they are not interchangeable between 2 and 4 door cars).
I think coupe/touring fronts look lower, wider and more aggresive than the saloon/tourings.
I understand BMW kept the pre-face lift style for the M3 because of cost, but I prefer to think it was because it looked better!

I think it looks better to.

I like pre- face lift Couppe and post facelift saloon. Therfore can't vote as the poll isn't sufficiently granular.

    Alll bets are off
