    Hi all

Quick question I have a 1996 'N' e36 coupe and I need to replace the front kidney grill.

Could somebody confirm whether I need facelift versions or not

    Regards Chris

The age of your car would suggest that you would need the pre face lift grille, however, by the look of the opening in your picture, it looks like the face lifted grille is required. The car may have been fitted with the facelifted front panel, plus the grille that is still fitted, looks like a face lifted one, although there are aftermarket grilles for the early cars, that look like the facelifted models. Try a scrap yard, see if you can pick one up for each car, and see which one fits. Hope this helps.

As Geordie boy says.. Looks like you've got a facelift nosecone fitted. The design crosses over in 1996 so your car should be a pre-facelift with the more squarer grilles.

Can you get a pic of your grill up?

I agree with others! A post-facelift kidney grille will fit there.

i think that would take a face lift grille.... i seem to be having a mental block but there must be other alterations on a face lift car other than the shape of the grille!?

    Yes there are!
    A) On the facelift cars, the front lower grille (on the bumper) is just one piece where as on pre facelift there are 3 lower grilles (2 small ones and 1 large one, almost like an M3 but less aggressive).
    B) The side repeaters on pre facelift has the black plastic surrounding it, where as on post lift it's just the light.
    C) Kidney grilles are more squarer on pre face lift cars.
    D) The A/C was analogue on pre facelift, but digital on post facelift.
    E) Unless you wanted colour coded side-skirts/sills and bumpers, on pre facelift they were grey and on post they were black.
    F) Engine was slightly different (4cylinder models).
    G) On some occasions steering wheel was different. Referring to earlier ones without airbags.
    H) The hands on the dashboard dials (Speed, RPM, Fuel, Temp) where white through out it on pre lift, but on post lift they were white until it reached the circle thing that moved the hands. Again referring to earlier ones.
    I) I think the gear lever for automatics were also different. Older ones had like a walking-stick and post had like a manual one.

    Can't think of any more
