Hi, Iam looking at a BMW to buy. E46 323 2001 model. lacquer is coming away on bonnet, dose this mean it has had a respray? should i walk away. its HPI clear. the car looks great and drives great. just not sure.

I was told BMWs dont have lacquer come away unless they have been repaired?

just not sure? any advise would be great.

    thanks

    sorry if its wrong section...

To be fair wampa...even if it has had a respray, I still would not walk away from the car if it drives/looks good! As long as all the panels line up and there are no signs of major damage, I wouldnt worry at all! With some resprays you cant even tell as the quality of the work is at such a high standard. Some people tend to respray their bumpers and bonnets to get rid of stone chips, maybe he did it for that reason?

To respray the front bumper and bonnet proffesionally would cost you £200-£300 which is not bad if the price of the car is good in relation to its condition. I would suggest you use this laquer factor as a bargaining tool to bringdown the price a bit more which you can use towards a future respray.

Is it a coupe? If it does sound 'too cheap', then you need to question him a bit more and try suss out why it is so cheap. Maybe theres something he is hiding? Normally when I come across a 'too cheap' car, there is most of the time something wrong. Sometimes they are desperate to sell due to family commitments and other stuff, so its not always the case. Make sure you go to www.motinfo.gov.uk and input the car's V5c document reference number and number plate on the form to retrieve the vehicle's pevious MOT history and mileage history to ensure it has not been clocked back.

Sounds a reasonable reason for getting rid of the car, i had a company car and noticed my own car was standing around gathering dust so sold it cheaply, as Hassan has said if it looks and drives well, with FSH id get it resprayed and enjoy a bargain.
