I have a e90 330d MSport in Sparkling Graphite. My brake calipers are crying out for a lick of paint. After Mark kindly pointed me in the direction of his DIY guide, I was thinking about doing it myself. A mate of mine wants to get his done as well though, so have now decided to get them done with him professionally.

Originally I was just going to get them done in silver, but today I have been thinking that black may be better option. I like the fact that black ones will kind of fade in the background and leave centre stage to the silver MV3 alloys

What do people think? Black or silver brake calipers?

Definitely black, I'm a firm believer that these components should not draw attention from the rest of the car

I agree that they often start to look undesirable and need a little tidy up from time to time. I use a heat resistant spray paint straight on top of a surface that is wire brushed and degreased. Seems to last over 6 months plus and is effective considering the cost

Yeah I know what you mean. Currently 3 of them are really rusty. The grey they were painted originally doesnt really draw attention, which is good.

I think if I got them painted silver, they would detract from the alloys. Looking at the alloys, your sight would be broken with silver calipers in the background. At least if they were black, wouldnt really notice them and I like that. Thats the theory anyway .

think reason why was apprehensive about black at first is because i was afraid of looking bit chavvy

Did find a photo of a black caliper on same colour car. Not keen on the BMW lettering though

    What's the history/ protocol here?

I've been looking at new brake disks and after seeing a few pictures of the brembo brakes which have a graphite finish and in many cases are coupled with red calipers.

For your colour car red might be inappropriate - with mine, which is silver with graphite alloys, I almost want a flash of colour to define the wheels.

In your case a silver finish would cause minimum distraction although the graphite might afford a little welcome contrast.

    adios
    I'm loving it

Dizzle, by sheer fluke, my neighbour has just painted his 320d Sport's calipers and hubs in black. He is on nights so come the weekend I will get some phot's for you.

Yeah I can see how the red will work well with graphite alloys.

I'm not saying I thought all black calipers would look chavvy, i just think that the colour chosen has to blend in nicely with alloys and car. Originally I didn't think black would suit my setup, but now think it probably will.

red, gold and other colour calipers can look great, but just depends on the car, alloys etc IMO
