as far as i know it is possible to paint them, though apparently it's worth lightly sanding them. Personally i would just buy some ready painted matt black ones

Its is possible to paint them black...you got to think of the advantages of both though...If you buy black grills then they won't get stone chipped like painted grills do however they are more expensive than paintint the grills yourself....

You thinking of gloss or matt black?
Either way you'll need some 1000 grit wet/dry or finer and some either black silk or gloss spray paint and some laquer to give it extra protection If you leaving the grill lines chrome then just cover this part with masking tape

I just bought one fine sand paper and a cheap primer and a tin of rattle satin black paint (hammerright) and it's worked a treat

when i brought my car the grill had been previously painted black, it looked great but after a few months it began to chip and peel quite easily so i replaced with a brand new black grill and i am much happier
