Yes you will need to remove the switch, IIRC there is a screw behind it as well

    Hi Ronnie

Do you know where I can find a copy of a pdf instruction sheet for removing the rear door panels on my E46.
Boostist listed one a few messages ago but it was only for the front door of a coupe (E46) will this be the same instruction for a (46 Touring)

If you can help it would be appreciated – thanks Martin

There's a good write up in the Bentley workshop manual if I remember rightly. I believe Boostist or Ronnie have a link for the download... I've used it a few times but i've got a copy of the disc not the downlaod version.

There are a couple of links if you google Bentley bmw manual download

The door mirror has been snapped off my E46 convertible so I turned to Google to see if there was help out there....

As a result I've landed on this thread and become a member of Bimmerforums. Hey Presto! Here's a guide which gives all the help I needed to avoid breaking anything! Many thanks indeed to Boostist for the guide which looks perfect - if I don't report back you know it was 100% right.

OK, job's done! One point I will add - when you go to bolt the new mirror to the door there are NO THREADS in the new mirror. The bolts are a kind of "self tapping" screw which cuts its own thread. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN or you will strip the aluminium and be in real trouble with a damaged and very expensive new mirror housing. To see how tight it should be fitted, wiggle the mirror the other side of the car and you can feel how much play there should be.

    Thanks again!

Quick thanks to the OPs for the detailed guide. I had a "close encounter" of the wing mirror kind a couple of days ago. Nothing obviously broken, until I looked and saw the mirror plate mounting ring on the actuator was missing - along with the racks that engage with the motors.

Long story short - only way to re[place that is a new actuator assembly (£147!)- however the new one, while it works, has an extra ribbon cable in addition to that for the mirror heating. I guess it is a universal part and is for some other feature mine doesn't have or wasn't available when it was originally made.
