Just like to say I used to rub down wheels for old Porsches as a part time job (it was very theraputic). Never come across any wheel which had a rubber coating under the paint (it just is not logical!!?!!).
Sandblasting sounds harsh but the medium that is used is not always sand (Quartz) there is also ground walnut shell which is abrasive but does not peen the surface.

I would get my wheels back and go somewhere else!

If my flights and expenses are paid, and the extra baggage charges for a sandblaster and walnut-crushing machine.

Luckily the therapy is over and I have a proper job now.

erm you ahve had your pants down my son there is no rubber coating for alloys and as per normal alloy refurb they should be sandblasted anyway so you have just payed extra for a option that is already covered in the original price.

Im gunna be a little harsh but the only rubber that guy saw was the one he used to .......................... ill let you use your imagination

Paint stripper would have gone through the rubber anyway? Think they're having you on mate. So whats that cost you in total now, £350? for refurbing a set of oem 7 spoke alloys..

    I'd murder for that much

Maybe the refurb guy was referring to the TYRE on the wheel perhaps? Probably tried sandblasting them and couldn't get them to budge!?!?! lol.

£150 Extra? You can buy a set of those wheels with tyres for that alone, never mind the original refurb price. Tell him to take a hike.

    *Update*

Just been offered a full respray at half price due to the inconvenience. I may check the bank balance and see if its viable. They had done some rust repair for me prior to the alloy wheel fiasco and I must admit they did a fantastic job.

Anyway he quoted £600 (reduced from £1200) to respray the whole car which seems pretty reasonable.

Weird that, because whenever you have a shell sandblasted you are supposed to get all the rubberised sealants off first as the sand bounces off and the job takes forever......
