I recently took my alloy wheels to be refurbished at Carters in Cheltenham http://www.cartersvehiclesolutions.co.uk/.

I just got off the phone to 1 of the owners who said he has never seen anything like the coating that was currently on my alloys. He said it had some sort of rubber coating prior to being painted and that whatever he tried he just couldn't get the rubber off the alloy. As a result I have to pay an extra £150 on top of the refurb cost to have the wheels sand blasted before he can continue with the refurb. Obviously embarrassed he has offered to have my car fully valeted in compensation, no arguments there.

Anyway to my point, I have spent some time on google trying to find out more information on alloy wheels with a rubber coating under the finish but so far found nothing. I thought I'd throw it out to you guys to see if any of you have had an experience like this before?

These are the best pics I can find of the wheels which are standard 7 spoke BMW which I believe were fitted from new. Pics were taken 18 months ago so the wheels are in a poorer state than shown.

    Any ideas guys?

never came across this rubber myself either mate surely the company would just sandblast them thereselves as for a decent repair dont you have to take them right back anyway. dont quote me on that as never had companys do them for me i refurb my own. im tight and can do it for myself at half there prices lol.

back ontop maybe its some form of protective gel coating to help the fight against curbing

A quote is a quote at the end of the day. Did you get it in writing? If you want to, you could press him to honour the original price, depends really if they are worth paying that much extra for?

Never heard of this coating though..

would be handy to see the actual process for refurbing to see if they ment to be sandblasted anway

Hi, never heard of this rubber coating before, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I think you're being ripped off though, them wanting another £150 on top of what ever you have been quoted.
Got some M3 sunflowers refurbed about 5 months ago, price including shot blasting, powder coating and laquering for 4 alloys was £140.00, but as I knew the guy, he did them for £100.00.

Do you pay over the odds for most things down there? Is it regional on prices, as those kind of prices certainly would never be entertained up here in Northumberland!

Most of the companies I have looked into chemically remove the paint back to bare metal before painting, generally there is no need to blast them unless they are having lots of layers of paint removed...

If someone has quoted to do a job (any job), in writing, then AFAIC they cannot come back afterwards and say it was harder than they thought and therefore are charging more - I think that would be an "estimate" and NOT a "quotation" Guess it depends if the OP got it in writing, or feels that it's worth the extra - not really for me to comment.

I was originally quoted £195 for the 4 (refurb 4 for the price of 3 offer) which was a good price to start with.

As he had already attacked 1 wheel I had a choice of either getting them back off him with 1 damaged wheel or agree to pay the extra, my hand was forced really :(

Your hand might have been forced mate but your pants dont need to come down with it and if the guy was any good whatever coating is on them isnt worth 150 quid extra and its his problem as he would have inspected them first before starting any work surely.ive just been quoted 350 for my wheels taken right back, new bolts, color change and highly polished and i think thats dear

have the wheels back and don't pay anything, there are powder coaters out there that will sand blast them and coat them for less than £150, I have mine done off the tryes for £100 all in, that was in Birmingham so not a million miles away from you.

If you have wheels already on the car then you have a bit more flexibility but as said about, don't get bent over on this. Sandblasting alone shoudl cost no more than about £80 for all 4 wheels...

EDIT: I have known people get wheels just sand blasted for £10 per corner!

I'm feeling pretty sick right now to be honest but given my lack of options and the need to have the car back for work I've decided to let them finish off the work. I'll post some pics as soon as I have it back. They need to do the job of their lives though...
