Hi, the gear knob on my E36 323i is the leather type M sport but it has a tear in it which makes it cut into my hand so time for a replacement.

I understand the gear knob pulls off but the leather gaiter seems to cover part of the existing gear knob.

Is there some special way of taking the gaiter down before pulling the gear knob or is it just a case of brute force and praying

This will obviously have an impact when the new gear knob goes on, should it be sunk into the gaiter?

Just pull hard and watch you don't hit yourself some people say its easier to put into 2nd gear...It doesn't really make a difference to me though...What I do know is that many people have hit themselves pulling it

as stk says..try tiwsting it slightly too..putting it in second will allow you too get a better grip as the gearstick is leaning more away from the console...allowing your hand too wrap completely round it...do NOT have your face directly above it

I did wonder about all the innuendos as I wrote the thread so I'm glad you rose to the challenge Mr STK

So should I be worried about the Gaiter ripping or should I slide that off first (oh dear )
