I'd recommend snowing to anyone. gets super clean in all the hard to reach places & is fun too
    Answer me this:

Does snow foaming eliminate the need to scrub with a sponge? I've never been sure...

Not normally. Some washing is needed. I'd never use a sponge tho! this will swirl you paint! a wash mitt and two bucket method!

Before I used snow foam I'd be using 4-8 buckets per wash. Now I only ever use 2. one for washing & one to rinse mitt.

I always find that mitt's scratched my old car, so have refused to use one on the e36.. What's recommended?

Don't you use any snow foam solution?

I snowed it twice! First just with snow solution & warm water. Second with snow, zipwax (50:50) & warm water then rinsed. Completely clean. And yes it was very dirty!
