Can I fit a non airbag steering wheel to my coupe with an airbag?

simply cos the original standard one is it shocking condition and I want an M3 style one. Do I have to shell out for a fancy one with an airbag or can I fit a non airbag one?

depends if you want to live? lol thats a bit blunt, but basically if you remove your steering wheel and fit one without you will need to disconect the steering wheel and remove it, sounds simple but i bet its not, and then also if you do have a crash you might feel a bit more pain if its a bad one :P

but you can do anything you want mate also the insurance company will want to know

Airbag light isn't currently an MOT failiure... I am sure that it will be one day soon (if the Ministry get their way)...

Therefore, I think that it might be better to source a steering wheel that will fit, is in better condition and also retains the all important safety device

obviousy it would be better and I plan getting one at somepoint I just want something that is in better nick for now, I can always remove the airbag bulb if necessary. obviously you desconnect your battery for about 20 mins before unplugging any airbag feature. But I just wanted to know if it will fit.
    Cheers, Jay

It will fit in your car as long as the wheel you will be using is suitable for the E36. I wouldn't worry too much about using a non airbag type. I certainly wouldn't be counting on an airbag 16 years old to deploy correctly, if at all!

Removal of the wheel is very straight forward. Simply remove the front centre of the steering wheel to uncover a large bolt, undo this and the wheel should just slide straight off, make sure to disconnect the battery and connections behind the wheel.

ya I've changed wheels in the past, jsut wanted to know if the non airbag/airbag ones were compatiable, obviously I'lbe getting one that's comeoff an E36 so should be no problems. Just wanted to know if the airbag can just be left unplugged.....
    Cheers, Jay

I hope so because my airbag isn't connected. The previous owner butchered the airbag connection on the car so I'm running it totally unplugged.

hehe, I'm watching a few on ebay, found some with airbags too so hopefully I'll get one of those then wont have to worry. If not then I now it's ok to run without one.
