    Hey,

Just bought a 1994 325, the engine is in great shape and the car looks fantastic from afar.. but as soon as you get close

mostly its just little rust bubbles and stone chips, but the rear arches are getting pretty bad.

So far i've cleaned out the arches and waxoyled them, however i'd like to something a bit more perminant, has this rust got bad enough to need a bodyshop? or could i still save it myself?

I'm planning on getting some sanding it back to bare metal, then priming and respraying it by hand, but how good a finish will i get from this? or are these areas small enough to use a touchup pen?

For the arches-- they dont look to have gone porous. I would say from the pics that the metal is still likely to be sound under that rust. looks more surface than catastrophic failure. I use a travelling paintshop guy for my scratch repairs. When I found my last car had been scuffed badly on one corner, he came down, sanded the area down to hide the damage and painted it back to normal for around 50 quid. The area he painted was a good 2 foot by 2 foot section of the car.

If it were mine, I would be tempted to have a go myself, if you screw it up, then go the body shop route.

I say give it a bash yourself - I've done a few rust repairs and you'd be surprised how easy it is - sand, prime, paint, laquer!

At the end of the day if you spend £25 on paints etc and have a go yourself, its only £25 lost if you think it looks rubbish and subsequently take it to a repair shop!!

    Good luck!

Dont get yourself down about it mate at the end of the day MonadProxy, Its a 15 year old car, its not going to be perfect but as the other members have said, have a crack at it yourself. If you pull it off you will feel alot better about yourself

just attacked my 1990 316i on rear wheel arch was really bad and pitted sanded back to bare matal filled with aluminium car body filler finished off with wet and dry for a fine finish primed it then sprayed with can. dont use halfords sprays as they dont normally match i used a supplyer in my area called cars in broadstairs kent they take the ral number which is the proper colour for your car they mix this in house while you wait cost £10 a can but is definately worth it.sorry havent got any piks to show but you cant see the difference also use a compound after spraying this gets rid of any over spray ok buddy i hope this has helped
