    Hi guys,
Firstly thank you for any advice passed on here. I own a 2008 325 m sport coupe. It was recently in an accident which resulted in the back passenger side alloy hitting the kirb and the passenger side seat and pillar airbags being deployed. The damage to the back wheel does not look too bad however I have ha many people saying the car will automatically be written off due to the airbags.
Is there much truth in this, surely a car of that value will not be junked for that, however I have no motoring knowledge so I am looking for a bit of experienced advice
    Thanks

    Heres how the categorise work

Cat D - Repair does not exceed pre accident value, No VIC required
Cat C - Repair exceeds pre accident value, VIC check required
Cat B - salvage write off, car cannot be allowed back onto the road, however, can be sold as parts for spares
Cat A - complete and total write off, cannot be sold as parts for spares

VIC = Vehicle Identity Check, which is carried out by the police post repairs

i presume your car is worth up around 13k depending on mileage, if its a diesel or petrol and based on spec of course. I highly doubt that it would be written off, never heard of deployed air bags causing a write off in a car with some value, it will be expensive to fix undoubtedly but it should still receive a Cat D, if its really bad a Cat C but not a write off. What are you worried about anyway, as long as your insured... you only loose your no claims, not the value of the car should it be written off, which again, is highly unlikely.

Thanks for taking the time to reply,
The car is a petrol and quite highly specked up so it's value is work probably approx 15k (40k miles)
This gives me a tad of peace of mind that it may not be a write off,
You are totally right in what u are saying about it not being a huge problem as insurance will pay out but as they are to most people, my BMW is my pride and joy and I would hate to see it junked when it may not have to be

If its well spec'd as you say then its even more so a reason for it not to be a Cat D

My rough guess, and this comes with no knowledge of repairing cars whatsoever, is that with 2 airbags gone and some body work and/or work to rear axle as i imagine it could be a bit "broken" if the wheel ripped it off then repairs wont come close to half of the cars value.

Mind you, even if done by an authorised repair shop and to a top quality standard using new and original parts, your cars value will plummet come resale time. So if your not too attached and haven't done to much work to the car yourself which cant be removed so its not wasted money, maybe have a chat with the insurer if they would be willing to pay out for the car and buy a replacement with that? Just something for you to consider so you don't loose money in the long run.

not sure if this still goes but if the insureance rights it off see how much there going to give you then offer to buy the car back from them strip it for the parts get another bmw put all the good stuff on that and you still end up with money in your pocket but you need to talk with them before they right it off or you wont get that option
