The ones I saw advertised at 6.5K were dogs. One, 100K miles boot lid did not fit, worked out I think rear quarter was down a cm and there were hammer marks in the boot. The second I saw, monocoque looked straight, no history and a world better at 130K but then I noticed the oil cooler bent like a banana and a load of other worrying stuff under the front.

Thinig is that's why I said a good haggle earlier. Mine was up for 7.8K, I texted the guy and said I was looking to spend around 6.5K he answered "that's a little low" not "go away" so I knew he was flexible and between him keeping an expensive after market exhaust I did not want (too noisy and a modification) etc we struck a deal. There are a few minor things to do, oil level sender, rear view mirror etc
I got a good car in it's original paint with a few stone chips, low mileage engine which is what I worry most.

When I say the other two, the second looked worth 6.5 till I looked under the front and after that I thought I was going to have to push the boat out to get something I didn't drive away with a sick feeling.

Tricky, just remember you have the power as long as you have the money but aren't desperate to buy.

M3s seem to stack up a lot of owners with people buying for a year of 6 months and selling again. I bet you the same mint cars keep getting traded for 8 and re-sold around 10 over and over.
I'm a tin top fan so I would always go M3 out of those.

A mate had a string of M3s, then a boxster them more M3s and now waiting to see if the 996 bonds

Yep M3 feels like a larfe sow battleship until it picks up its heels, but a very nice one to sit and cruise in.

M3's are poorly built and have all had a hard life, finding one that is well maintained seems to be the hardest part. I have driven 4 x M3's (one stock, one modded, one coupe, one convertible) and compared to my 330i E46 all felt cheap, plasticy and flimsy.

    M5 is where it's at.......
    Driveway history:
    E39 - 2002 M5 - Oxford Green with gold interior - current
    E38 - 1997 750iL - Black with black interior
    E46 - 2002 330i Convertible - Gold with gold interior

Lol that's funny because my mate said his dad's 330 felt like his M3, except slow..

Also M3s haven't has as hard a life as people think because most people can't handle RWD sideways for one and second roads aren't big enough, or empty enough.

I will concede they are noisier and rattle more but they do have 80% of their suspension components different to a 330 to handle better so are stiffer etc.

M3 and 330 are built the same but the chunky steering wheel in the M3 feels nicer.

Once it's off and rolling the M3 feels a breed apart. Better in every way bar a little NVH.
