hello, firstly apologies if i have posted in the wrong section i have only posted once before.I have a problem with my 2004 3 series e46 convertible and the problem is this. The car seems to just rev without any sort of acceleration its really sluggish and in 8 days has gone through roughly £110 of petrol and i am not a foot to the floor driver,i dare not pull out of junctions etc because the car has hardly any power it is averaging around the 30mpg.when its on a motorway or dual carrige way and up to 70 its not too bad i get some sort of throttle response but i am deeply dissapointed with the car i thought bmw's were fairly nippy but this is just no good the petrol its using.anyone have any ideas cheers - stu

Is it a manual, sounds like your clutch is slipping?

Generally when the revs rise rapidly but not alot of foward motion is happening its the clutch slipping, if your not that technical have a good independant look at it for you.

today i went to a garage were i have always got my cars sorted so i have a good rapport with the fitters there so myself and one of the lads took my car for a run out and this is what he said,he ruled out the clutch slipping almost straight away it has a massive flat spot so he turned to the air flow meter he wired the diagnostics machine up and the airflow meter was working giving a reading from what i could see of between 8 and 9 now too me that tells me nothing because i dont know if thats acceptable or its rubbish.he also removed the air flow meter and took the car out again and it was no different the air filter was quite dirty so we cleaned it out with a airline and it was slightly better but now i am at a bit of a crossroads after ruling out clutch slip and air flow meter.all i know is when i start the car on a morning it smells of petrol quite strongly and the main gripe i have is that in the space of say 3 weeks i have spent nearly £200 on fuel.anymore suggestions would be handy like i say i am new to the site and do not know who to ask etc so any help would be great.stu

Not sure what that could be to be honest, hopefully one of the other guys can help.

The diagnostics should have indicated if there were any fault codes, could be anything from an ignition problem to a crank position sensor issue.

remove the egr valve and give it a good clean, normally if its sticking would throw up an error, but its an easy thing to rule out so well worth the 5 mins to remove it and upto 1 hour cleaning.

    petrols dont have EGR's

if its running lean due to vaccum leaks the ecu will tell the injectors throw more fuel in you need to get the fuel trim data (short term and long term fuel trim) so we can see how its running..erratic revs or idling is a sure sign of vacuum leaks also is it running at full temp?..

if you get setup with INPA will be able to help you better...
330i sport a big chunk of berlin...
